Long gone are the days of just vanity press, where going independent meant no one wanted to publish you. In these uncertain days, publishers are less likely to sign up an unknown author. However, with the advent of ebooks and POD (Print on Demand) services, New York publishing houses are no longer the only game in town.

There are plenty of books telling you how to become an Indie (independent publisher.) There are also plenty of blogs and websites that will tell you, too. Some of these are people wanting to sell you books and services and have written articles to show you they know their stuff. Always check them out before you sign or buy anything. There are plenty of sharks out there. Also, keep in mind that there are a dozen different ways to go Indie. That legit company might be offering you more or less services than you need. Learn all the options and pick the one that works best for you.

Below are some sites I've run across that have been useful. I will try to add to them. Authors are quite happy to share their knowledge because 1) it cuts down on having to answer the same question over and over, 2) Maybe you will like them and buy their book, or at least look at it, 3) they want you to succeed because successful Indie books make us all look good.
